Stocking Up for a Travel Tournament

If your team is travelling for a tournament, it’s important that you have everything you could need packed and ready to go before pulling out of the driveway. Unless your town’s sports organization is hosting the tournament, chances are it’s more than a few minutes’ drive away. Are you willing to drive an extra two hours because your athlete forgot something? Even if you were willing (and that makes you a great sports parent!) you don’t have two hours before their game to do so.

When packing your sports bag for a tournament, here is a good checklist to work through to make sure you don’t forget anything important:

Stocking Up for a Travel Tournament

Clothes

  • Home and away uniforms (socks, jerseys, hat, shorts/pants, etc)

  • Sweatshirt + sweatpants

  • Gloves (in case it gets chilly)

  • Change of clothes (for the car ride home or after-tournament team dinner)

  • Pair of shoes

Gear

  • Mouth guards

  • Protective eyewear

  • Expected equipment (cleats, shin guards, hockey sticks, gloves, etc.)

  • Sunglasses

Food/Beverages

  • Water (bring extra!)

  • Sports drinks (Gatorade, Powerade, etc. Stay away from energy drinks.)

  • Snacks (fruit, veggies, protein pars, nuts, etc)

Medical

  • Bug spray

  • Sunscreen

  • Lip balm

  • Allergy meds

  • First Aid kit

Obviously the time of year and what sport you youth athlete is playing might affect what goes into your grab-and-go sports bag, but this list should give you a good idea of where to start. The longer your child is involved in youth sports the more you’ll learn about what “must haves” need to be in their sports bag for a tournament. Some teams that travel frequently may want to create a team sports bag (and just keep it with the coach) with stuff that all the players can use, including snacks, a big first aid-kit and emergency contact list.
